Insightful post, I like it when people can keep their wits about them even though everyone else is either screaming "Long live iPad!" or "Off with its head"...

As it turns out, some possible must-have use cases for certain verticals is are already emerging, apart from the uptake for gaming, etc. by kids that may drive this a lot faster than what we may imagine right now (liked the quote about: Kids' engagement doesn't lie).

1) Meetings: Steve Rubel wrote a post about how the ipad is a more acceptable meeting device than either laptop (creates barrier) or phone (people think you are just checking email/texting).

2) Citrix Receiver app basically invites any level of deep, enterprise/etc. applications onto the iPad. Could be ideal for doctors/medical, where the same issue of perceived barrier with a laptop, as well as possible hygiene reasons could come into play (iPad has a very clean/cleanable design).

Hey Alex,

Thanks for the note, and I keep hoping that Apple gets serious about driving adoption in verticals, as it seems like a no-brainer, and since the launch of OS 3.0 they support hardware-accessory makers providing software based control functions, meaning these things could be labs in a box, patient monitors, field worker devices, etc.

In any event, that's my rant on verticals (thanks for the links). As to the office side of the equation, the device feels like it could be the notepad I no longer have to bring into meetings because it's got the form-factor of a small book, easy to carry wherever I go.

Cheers,

Mark

nice post. I purchased my ipad last night and I have to say the first day out is a failure in my mind..The dow dropped 1000 points today. I am sitting in the bathroom (ipad is the perfect bathroom material) and I am on drudge report and I see some links to some videos on the drop in the market. Off I go. excited that my ipad is the ultimate device. I click and go to abc and wait... no video... huh? no video!! ok. I ignore this and search on google for other videos of the drop. I am magically transported to nbc to view a video of kramer talking about it. uh oh.. screen is blank in the middle. no video either. This test run is starting to be ugly. I am still in the bathroom and I decide to wire the rent money to my landlord. Off I go to wachovia. I .login to the wachovia connection service. I go to send wire. damn!! the dynamic drop down menu is not loading the next page on click. Safari is having a problem with this website. If only I had firefox!!!!!! :-(. It looks like I have to do all of this on my laptop.

@j, to your point, one conundrum with a device like this is that while it solves a lot of problems (mobility, battery longevity, no heat, piggybacks on proven platform, great web experience), it's not 100% (input is less robust than notebook, flash absence creates some gaps), but on the whole, it has changed the way I go about living room and mobility computing, and it will only get better. I am very happy with the device, but as the gaps addressed by your point are filled in, I expect to be ecstatic.
